CRETE ISLAND - GREECE
Crete is situated in the middle of the Aegean and Libyan
Sea, to the south of mainland Greece, and is the largest
Greek island. It is world renowned for its hospitality,
traditional lifestyle, and the archaeological remnants of
the Minoan civilization. The island is full of small towns,
villages, and picturesque mountains where travellers can
glimpse the Cretan goat, “Kri-Kri”. Crete is separated into
four prefectures: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lassithi.
Chania is famous for the Venetian harbour and charming
edifices, whereas Rethymno is a romantic area with golden
sandy beaches. Heraklion is a modern town and the capital of
the island. Last but not least, Lassithi with its long sandy
beaches and palm trees. In addition to the main island,
there is a small island off the coast called Elafonissos
(Elafonissi), which is said to be the most beautiful place
in Crete.
