KARPATHOS ISLAND - GREECE
Karpathos is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese
islands, in the southeast Aegean Sea. It is located about 30
miles southwest of Rhodes. Its main town and capital is
Karpathos City, also known as Pigadia, which holds the
island’s largest port. The island has many villages, some of
which are Menetes, Aperi, Volada, Mesohori and Olympos.
Olympos is especially known to visitors as it is the only
place in Greece where people still wear traditional
clothing. It has a population of 6.000 people, which more
than doubles during the summer reaching as much as 20.000.
The peculiar Karpathian houses are built of carved stone and
are full of embroidery and characteristic interior
decorations giving a traditional tone to the island. It has
a beautiful wild landscape, mountainous in the north and
fertile in the south, with wildflowers making it a paradise
for naturalists. Karpathos has extensive beaches with white
sands which are often empty.
